If you want faster internet speeds and a more stable connection, it might help to connect an ethernet cable to your computer or laptop directly. It’s a simple process, and we’re here to walk you through it step by step.

How to Connect an Ethernet Cable to a PC

For a desktop computer, the process of connecting an ethernet cable is straightforward:

  1. Find the ethernet port on your internet router
  2. Plug one side of your ethernet cable into an empty slot
  3. Take the other end of the cable and plug it into your PC. When on a desktop, the ethernet port is typically located on the back panel.

Your computer should automatically connect to the internet using the ethernet cable, even if you were previously using a wireless connection. You can check this by going to your network and internet settings.

How to Connect an Ethernet Cable to a Laptop

If you have an ethernet port on your laptop, the process is like a desktop.

  1. Connect one end of the cable to your router or modem
  2. Then plug the other end onto an ethernet port which, on laptops, is typically on the side of the keyboard near where you plug in your power cord

Be aware that some laptops won’t have an ethernet port because they’re designed to work exclusively using Wi-Fi. If this is the case, you can buy a USB ethernet adapter as a workaround.
To plug in a USB ethernet adapter, simply...

  1. Plug the USB end of the adapter into a USB port on your laptop
  2. Then plug in your ethernet cable into the slot on the other end

Just like with desktops, your computer should automatically connect to the internet using the ethernet connection.

How to Connect an Ethernet Cable to a Mac

Similarly to the desktop PC, plugging in an ethernet cable on your Mac is simple.

  1. Find the ethernet port on your internet router
  2. Plug one side of your ethernet cable into an empty slot
  3. Take the other end of the cable and plug it into your Mac. When on a Mac, the ethernet port is typically on the back of the screen.

How to Connect Using Ethernet on Windows 11

To configure your network and ethernet settings on Microsoft operating systems like Windows 11, you’ll need to follow a few easy steps:

  1. Open the start menu and click settings
  2. Choose the ‘Network & Internet’ option
  3. Select ‘Ethernet’
  4. Use the information on this page to determine if your connection is working. If you’re having issues, try a different ethernet port on your router, or use a different ethernet cable

On an Apple computer, like a Mac, the process is similar:

  1. Start by selecting the Apple menu and then click ‘System Preferences”
  2. In the dropdown, select “Network”
  3. In this next menu, you’ll be able to see the status of your ethernet connection

In Conclusion

Using an ethernet connection by connecting an ethernet cable to your computer will typically give you a faster, more stable connection to the internet.
