The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is a method for determining cybersecurity standards for Department of Defense contractors.
The updated CMMC standards were announced in November 2021 and the DoD has declared that by the fiscal year 2026, all new contracts will have the updated CMMC requirements—all businesses that are not compliant with these requirements will be unable to win contracts. Further updates are pending on when businesses should be compliant.
CMMC 2.0 will not be a contractual requirement until the Department completes rulemaking to implement the program. The expected timeline to be is nine to 24 months from November 2021. The exact timeline is currently unknown and contractual requirements will be announced once the rule-making process is completed.
